Hook announced his departure from AMD earlier this month after nearly two decades of high-profile PR work with the company. He most recently served as Senior Director of Global Product Marketing. He now has the distinction of being the first employee within Intel devoted to discrete graphics marketing. More specifically, Hook will direct marketing efforts for visual technologies and discrete graphics, driving strategies across verticals for future launches of discrete GPU products. Though not officially disclosed by Intel, some of those discrete GPU products will be in the enthusiast gaming space. Last week it was revealed that Intel's Raja Koduri drew legendary engineer Jim Keller away from Tesla, and this week it's his former right-hand RTG marketing man Chris Hook, who has a longstanding and positive relationship with Koduri. As I mentioned previously, I believe Koduri is just getting warmed up with these reunion efforts. Some of Hook's initial tasks at Intel will likely be to gain a deeper understanding of the company's current marketing climate and conduct conversations with press about their existing relationships with Intel. Most pressing may be creating a successful team around him to execute his ideas and influence perceptions that Intel's dedicated graphics operations are a force to be reckoned with. Intel's recent marketing has been tepid and uninspired; those aren't two adjectives many would associate with Chris Hook. He's an exuberant idea man who, in my opinion, was frequently handicapped by budget restrictions and company politics at AMD. Say what you will about AMD's GPU offerings, but Hook was instrumental in crafting successful launches using community-driven campaigns, guerilla marketing tactics, quick thinking and limited funding.
